As Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge welcome their second child, we offer a very special way to mark the moment. On the very day of the birth, just 750 Sovereigns were struck, continuing a tradition kept to mark the most important Royal occasions. It is fitting that as His Royal Highness Prince George becomes a big brother, we capture the moment just as we did for his birth – collectors will note that those coins sold out within days.
About the coin
When an occasion as momentous as the arrival of a new member of the Royal Family occurs, The Royal Mint plays its part in marking the event. In 2013, the nation welcomed Prince George to the world and many wanted to secure a souvenir of the special time. Now, as the young prince becomes a ‘big brother’, we will celebrate once more.
As the Cambridges announced their special news, we were poised, waiting to strike the coins that document this moment in history forever. 750 of our flagship coin, The Sovereign, were struck on the day of the Royal birth, making a coin already rich in history all the more historic. And these are particularly special editions of The Sovereign, with a reverse design to celebrate a new member of the Royal Family, paired with the familiar fourth portrait of The Queen by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS – a look to the past and to the future.
