America was a nation of tribes long before it was a nation of states, counties, and cities. In honour and recognition of the important contributions made by Indian tribes and individual Native Americans, serveral Indian tribes have issued their own coins sets since 2011. Not only do these sets depict Indian culture and traditions, but more important, these coin sets are symbol of the newly raising self-esteem of the Native American people. The coinage rights of the Indian Nations date back to bilaterial treaties of the 18th century with the Federal Government. Furthermore extensive rights were granted in the US constitution of 1788. Today the Bureau of Indian Affairs is responsible for the administration and management of the 566 federally recognised tribes.
