The Britannia is the national personification and patron of Great Britain. The archetypical image of the ancient goddess Britannia seated and holding a shield first appeared on Roman bronze coins in the 1st century AD. Britannia’s first appearance on British coinage was on the farthing in 1672. The Britannia Gold Coin was introduced the first time in 1987. This set commemorates 30 years of this event by releasing four coins with outstanding designs which were issued since then – the standing Britannia, Charioteer, Seated Britannia and Helmeted Head.
